DIABETES
Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects millions of people around the world. It is one of the top 10 killer diseases in the world. Diabetes occurs when the body can't produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels. This can lead to high blood sugar, which can cause serious health complications over time if left untreated. But with proper management and care, people living with diabetes can live a long and healthy life.
In this blog post, we'll explore the different types of
diabetes, the signs and symptoms to look out for, and the ways to manage and
prevent the disease. We'll also discuss the importance of healthy lifestyle
habits and how they can help you maintain optimal blood sugar levels and
overall health. By understanding and taking control of diabetes, you can live a
sweet life with fewer complications. So let's get started on our journey to
understanding this complex disease and how to manage it.
Did you know we have two (2) types of diabetes?
Type 1 Diabetes: This type is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, leading to a lack of insulin in the body. It typically develops in the younger age group i.e children and young adults. It is commonly detected before the age of 30.
Type 2 Diabetes: This type is the most common form of diabetes, and it develops slowly and usually milder and stable. It occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough insulin and It is often associated with obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. Early diagnosis is important to prevent the worst effects of type 2 diabetes and the best way to detect diabetes early is to get regular check-ups and blood tests with a healthcare provider.
According to W.H.O, more than 95% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes.
This type 2 diabetes is often preventable. Factors that
contribute to developing type 2 diabetes include being overweight, not getting
enough exercise, and genetics.
Next, let's talk about the signs and symptoms of diabetes.
Glycosuria: This is simply high level of sugar in your urine because the body is trying to get rid of excess sugar in your blood by flushing it out through urine.
Polyphagia (Increased hunger): When the body cells don't get the glucose they need for energy, the body may start breaking down fat and muscle for energy, causing an excessive appetite for food.
Other symptoms include; Dehydration, Fatigue, skin irritation/ infection, vision problem, decrease in the body healing capacity and loss of weight.
Let’s discuss some of the complications associated with diabetes and how to prevent them.
Complications:
Heart Disease: Diabetes can increase the risk of heart disease, so managing blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight can help prevent this complication.
Eye Disease: Diabetes can cause damage to the blood vessels in the retina, which can lead to vision loss. Regular eye exams can help prevent this.
Kidney Disease: Diabetes can lead to kidney damage, which can eventually lead to kidney failure. Regular monitoring of blood pressure and kidney function can help prevent this.
Now let's dive into the management and prevention of diabetes.
Diabetes can either be treated with diet alone, diet and drugs or diet and insulin. The severity and type of the condition will determine which means will be used to manage it.
Management and Prevention:
Healthy Diet: Eating a balanced diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins can help manage blood sugar levels and prevent type 2 diabetes. Avoiding sugary drinks and processed foods can also help.
Physical Activity: Regular exercise helps your body use insulin more efficiently, which can help regulate blood sugar levels. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.
Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent type 2 diabetes.
Diet rich in vitamins especially Vit C and Vit E should be encouraged.
And for pregnant women, the total weight gain during pregnancy should ideally not exceed 12kg. This would help prevent the body from having an elevated blood sugar and genital malfunction.
Now, let's talk about healthy lifestyle habits that can help manage diabetes.
Healthy Lifestyle Habits:
Monitoring the Blood Sugar: Regularly checking your blood sugar levels can help you understand how your body responds to different foods and activities, which can help you make adjustments to your diet and lifestyle.
Stress Management: Chronic stress can raise blood sugar levels, so finding ways to manage stress, such as through meditation or yoga; can help you keep your blood sugar levels in check.
Get Enough Sleep: Lack of sleep can raise blood sugar levels, so aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help flush excess glucose from your body and prevent dehydration.
Support System: Having a supportive network of family and friends can make it easier to manage diabetes and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
In the dance of life with diabetes’ tune
We find our step, morning to noon
With care we balance sugar and soul
In harmony, we reach our goal.
